WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND THIS PAINTING, WHO IS THIS BROAD?I WANT SOME INFO. TSAR I’M LOOKING AT UUnless this is a very famous painting everyone’s familiar with, then I’m joking and totally know everything about it

judith holding the head of holofernes! it’s from a bible story~
i thiiink this one is by lucas cranach the elder? but it’s totally possible i’m pulling that out of my ass. brb research!

Yep, that one is by Lucas Cranach the Elder! He also did another version of the same subject:

I FEEL LIKE I WANNA KNOW MORE ABOUT HER.

okay so this Assyrian dude (HOLOFERNES) invades this Hebrew town where this rich widow (JUDITH, OUR HEROINE) lives and she is all ZUT ALORS WHAT SHALL WE DO and talks to some dudes around and they’re all like wow Holofernes sure has a lot of swords and horses and stuff so we are pretty much just gonna hope he doesn’t kill us, and that’s the plan. Judith is like FUCK THAT SHIT so she dolls herself up and goes to Holofernes’ camp with her maid (SUSIE) and is all, Holofernes! I have randomly decided that the Jews are the worst and I wish you all the best in destroying them, let’s get drunk. And Holofernes is like GREAT and he gets drunk and falls asleep. Judith prays to God awhile because this is the Old Testament and then she picks up his enormous sword and cuts off his actual head. She sticks it in a bag and is like WHELP GOTTA GO BYEEE to his guards outside and she and her maid fly on the wings of righteous justice back to the Hebrews where she waves his head around a lot and makes them wallow in her awesomeness. Then they all attack the Assyrians who are all GET HOLOFERNES and then realize he is dead, and headless, and still drunk probably, and then they feel really stupid and leave.
If you liked JUDITH you may enjoy the story of JAEL who is puttering around in her fabulous tent one day when the leader of an invading army pulls up and is like SHEESH IT IS HARD WORK KILLING ALL YOU GUYS and Jael is like dude, so sorry, would you like some milk? And he’s like I LOVE MILK, and then she nails a tent peg into the back of his head.
SMOTE.

He did several of them!

These are just things I have been told and learned, in some cases the hard way, myself. Not sure if this will even help anyone, but I’d be more than happy if it did:

  • Don’t try to hide what you can’t do. We all know things like hands are difficult. Instead of trying to put a person in a pose that feels unnatural, just draw the hands. You may think they look bad, and maybe they do, but it’s better to draw them than to hide them. Draw them because you don’t like drawing them, or because you think you can’t, eventually you’ll feel more comfortable drawing it.
  • Don’t give up. Sure, you’ll be discouraged, and certainly there are people better than you- but that doesn’t mean you should be intimidated. The best thing you can do is keep on keeping on.
  • Use reference. No matter how many times you’ve drawn a head, or bodies, or anything it is good to have references open. Create a reference folder if you have to, it’s good to have a library to go to. Reference isn’t just for information it’s also for inspiration. If you like a certain culture’s artwork maybe just keep a few images open while you work. It’s always good to have things to work off of.
  • Draw from life. Maybe it’s not your favorite thing to do, but it’s a great tool. Draw everywhere, go to a zoo, a mall, anywhere is a good place. Draw architecture, draw animals, people. The best thing you can do to practice is work from life, observational drawings and so on.
  • Draw often. As for myself, I feel sort of rusty if I don’t draw for awhile, I get almost stiff with it. It’s good to keep up a pace, even if you have artist’s block try not to let it stop you. Find a random image and doodle it, draw while you watch tv, do caricatures. Anything. Bring sketchbooks with you so that you may draw wherever and whenever inspiration hits.
  • Work traditionally. Now-a-days everyone loves their spiffy tablets, Cintiqs, they love, love, love to digitally render things. It’s not a bad thing at all- don’t stop- but working traditionally with graphite, acrylic, pastels and so on will only help your digital work.
  • Diversify. Use as many mediums as you can. You limit yourself by saying you cannot use one medium over another. Learning to sculpt will help your drawings, learning to draw will help your sculpture. Hell, even learning the art of story telling can help illustrators who need to present stories clearly with images. So do all the types of art you can!
  • Give and get critiques.  As an artist you learn not only by receiving critiques, but by giving them. When you give critiques you start to work at looking for elements of design and principles of art that work together in a piece. Of course it is also nice to receive critiques, it can be more fulfilling than to hear a simple “Cool!11!” Most of us are in this to improve.
  • Take a break. Don’t force a piece. If you’ve been working hours, and you’re growing upset- just take a deep breath and step back. A lot of times you get so wrapped up in a piece it’s hard to see what’s wrong, sometimes all you need is a fresh pair of eyes that come from stepping away from your art for awhile.
  • Start from the basics.  Continually practice them too. The importance of perspective, form, light, all those things will never diminish. It is good to do exercises to brush up on your fundamental knowledge.

There is so much more, really, but this is a good starting point. Everyone grows, and you’ll grow more the harder you work.

this is good
